Cluster initiative livMatS invited to submit full proposal

Living, Adaptive and Energy-autonomous Materials Systems (livMatS)

We are very pleased that our cluster initiative „Living, adaptive and energy-autonomous material systems“, or LivMatS for short, has successfully overcome the first hurdle in selecting the clusters of excellence. We are now looking forward to further elaborating the proposal for this challenging topic and will devote a great deal of energy and attention to this task in the coming weeks and months. The interdisciplinary cooperation of colleagues from such diverse fields as engineering, chemistry, physics, biology as well as the humanities and sustainability sciences, which is necessary for this topic, is very attractive and exciting. It enables us to jointly develop concepts for completely new material systems that operate without any external energy supply and can adapt to changing environmental conditions.

The livMatS cluster initiative aims to develop bioinspired material systems that can adapt to a wide variety of environments and supply themselves with clean energy. It is based on the Freiburg Center for Interactive Materials and Bioinspired Technologies (FIT) and the Freiburg Materials Research Center (FMF) of the University of Freiburg as well as the Sustainability Center Freiburg, which was founded in cooperation with the five Fraunhofer Institutes in Freiburg.

Interdisciplinary team of spokespersons: Prof. Dr. Jürgen Rühe (Faculty of Engineering, spokesperson), Prof. Dr. Anna Fischer (Faculty for Chemistry and Pharmacy, vice spokesperson), Prof. Dr. Thomas Speck (Faculty of Biology, Vice spokesperson)
