Maria Asplund is an expert in bioelectronics with a focus on tissue‐device interaction and biomaterials. She completed her PhD at the Royal Institute of Technology (KTH, Stockholm, 2009) and is, since 2011, a researcher at the Department for Microsystems Engineering (IMTEK) at the University of Freiburg, Germany. Her work has resulted in several new coating technologies which help making future electrodes and sensors for neuro‐electronic interfaces smaller, more energy efficient and durable. As a winner of an ERC Starting Grant in 2017 she is currently developing a new electrostimulation concept for tissue engineering to support healing of complicated wounds. In the H2020 project NeuraViPeR her implantable electrodes will be part of an endeavour to restore vision by electrical stimulation of the visual cortex. In addition to her work in Freiburg, she holds a Guest Professorship at the University of Luleå, Sweden. Furthermore. Maria Asplund is furthermore an active advocate for equal opportunities in academia for which she was awarded the Bertha Ottenstein Preis of the University of Freiburg (2020).
